Basic Training

NAUI Open Water

The NAUI Open Water certification program is an entry level course in scuba diving, which takes place over the course of two weeks:

During the first week, we do two Zoom sessions on two evenings from about 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Then the next weekend we go to the pool on both days for about 4-5 hours each day.

During the second week we have one Zoom session and then we are ready to go to the ocean for the checkout dives (ocean weather permitting).

Five ocean dives are held on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 7 a.m. Saturday at La Jolla Shores.

This program includes:

9 hours of classroom study in diving equipment, Diving Physics, Physiology, Dive Tables, Environment, Diving Safety, and First Aid.
6 hours of pool training in the use of snorkel and scuba equipment, dive skills and rescue techniques.
1 snorkel and 4 Scuba dives dives off La Jolla Shores.

SCUBA Diver graduates will be competent in basic open water diving activities and will receive a lifetime certification card honored around the world.

Course fee includes tuition, book, rental gear (for the duration of the class), and certification fee
All gear is furnished for the course with exception of mask, snorkel, booties and gloves, which we encourage students to buy after the first classroom session which includes gear education. Student/Military discounts are available.

Prerequisites:

•Participants must be able to swim 225 yards using any stroke non-stop.

•Float/tread water for 10 minutes.

•Bring bathing suit for pool, pen and paper for each night.

•Participants must have own booties which are available at a discount

•Free of any respiratory, circulatory illnesses.

Advanced Training

Advanced Diver

The NAUI Advanced Diver program is a mid-level continuing education course designed for new scuba divers to continue their training and for divers new to the area who want to familiarize themselves with diving in San Diego.

This course consists of:

A minimum of 6 dives with training in rocks, rips and reef entries, underwater navigation.
Air consumption calculations.
Night diving, kelp diving, marine life identification.
Optional boat diving.

The course is held over one or two weekends on site in La Jolla. Optional Boat trip is available.

Course fee includes tuition, book and certification fee
Gear rental is available at $65 for the duration of the course.

Prerequisites:

•Participants must be Basic Open Water certified or equivalent.

•Participants must provide all of their own equipment or rent all required equipment.

Nitrox Diver

The NAUI NITROX Scuba Diver program is an introduction to diving with gases other than air. Extend your bottom time with Oxygen Enriched Air and be a safer diver. The course is held over a two or three day period, and classes start at 5 pm.

This program includes:

4 hours of classroom study in diving equipment, Diving Physics, Physiology, Dive Tables, and Diving Safety.
2 Ocean dives off La Jolla with a boat dive option to one of the beautiful southern Channel Islands.

SCUBA Diver graduates will be competent in Enriched Air Nitrox diving activities in open water and will receive a certification card honored around the world.

Course fee ncludes tuition, book and certification fee
Gear rental is available at $60 for the duration of the course.

Prerequisites:

•Participants must be SCUBA certified.

•Free of any respiratory, circulatory illnesses.

Master Diver

The NAUI Master Diver program is for avid recreational divers who are Advanced certified or equivalent and wish to increase their understanding and enjoyment of diving. This course dives into in depth study of diving physics, equipment and physiology. Various specialty diving techniques will be covered including deep diving, light salvage, advanced navigation, wreck diving, night and low visibility diving and boat diving. Lifesaving and rescue techniques and procedures will be covered as well. This course is an excellent progression toward Leadership level and Technical certification courses.

This in-depth course consists of:

20 hours of in-depth lecture covering diving physics, physiology, advanced equipment technology and recompression chamber introduction.
8 Ocean dives to include deep diving, light salvage, advanced navigation, wreck diving, night and low visibility diving, boat diving.

Master Diver graduates will have a greater understanding of diving science, and will be prepared to enter into Leadership level certification courses if desired.

Prerequisites:

•Participants must be Advanced Diver certified or have equivalent experience.

•Must be at least 15 years of age.

•Participants must provide all of their own equipment or rent all required equipment.

Technical Training

Introduction to Technical Diving

The Intro to Tech class introduces recreational divers to the rigors and discipline of technical diving, and is a great preparatory course if you are considering specific technical diver training, such as cave or decompression diving, or are interested in streamlining your equipment configuration for maximum efficiency. Learn about dive planning, physics and physiology, decompression, decompression associated with technical diving, and buoyancy control. The NAUI Technical Equipment Configuration (NTEC) training is also part of the NAUI Intro to Tech course.

Prerequisites:

• 18 years of age, free of any respiratory, circulatory illnesses.

• Participants must be able to swim 225 yards using any stroke non-stop, float/tread water for 10 minutes.

• Must have certification in Nitrox and have minimum of ten Nitrox dives logged.

Technical Decompression with Helitrox Diver

This course provides you with the theory, methods, and procedures of planned staged decompression diving while using optimal breathing gasses to include a light trimix (helitrox) and oxygen during decompression.

Graduates will be competent to plan and execute decompression dives using helitrox and oxygen to depths not exceeding 150 fsw (46 msw).

This program includes:

8 hours of classroom study in diving equipment, Diving Physics, Physiology, Dive Tables, Gases, Mixing, and Diving Safety.
2 hours of pool training in the use of dive equipment and skills review.
Ocean dives off La Jolla with a boat dive option to one of the beautiful southern Channel Islands.
Provided is an in-depth study of Reduced Gradient Bubble Model (RGBM) decompression theory and RGBM dives tables are utilized exclusively.
Gas Blending methods and analysis.
Technical diving procedures and techniques.
Team building and diving protocols.

Gear Configuration: Preferred Hogarthian or DIR / NTEC with use of backplate inflation and long primary hose (covered in class).

Prerequisites:
• Participants must be able to swim 225 yards using any stroke non-stop, float/tread water for 10 minutes.
• 50 logged dives; must have certification in Nitrox and have minimum of fifteen Nitrox dives logged.
• 18 years of age, free of any respiratory, circulatory illnesses.
• Master diver certification
• Intro to Tech class or equivalent
• DAN Master insurance

Trimix Diver

The NAUI Trimix Diver program provides the Technical Diver with the skill and knowledge needed to minimize the risks of utilizing helium based breathing gases for dives to a maximum depth of 200 ft(Trimix) and beyond (Extreme Exposure Diver) requiring staged decompression and utilizing EANx mixtures and / or oxygen during decompression.

This course consists of:

20 classroom hours of in-depth study of advanced diving sciences, helium-based gas mixtures and planning.
Advanced equipment technology and gear configurations.
High emphasis on advanced diving skills and techniques.
Lifesaving, rescue, and contingency procedures are emphasized.
Gas Blending methods and analysis.

• 100 logged dives, 20 with decompression

Wreck Diver (External Survey)

If you are at least 18 years old and have a NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver certification or the equivalent thereof, you can take a Wreck Diver (External Survey) course and start exploring sunken vessels, aircraft, and other amazing wrecks in the underwater world.
Your NAUI Wreck Diver (External Survey) instructor will teach you about safety, hazards and cautions, special risks of overhead environments, entanglement, limited visibility, deep diving, equipment, location of wrecks, sources of information, search methods, underwater navigation, legal aspects, artifacts, treasure, salvage, archaeology, and much more. Get ready to start exploring!

NAUI Leadership

Familiarization-Instructor-Testing (FIT) Program

The NAUI FIT program is a non-certification program used as a prerequisite for enrollment in a NAUI Assistant Instructor Course, NAUI Divemaster Course or a NAUI Instructor Crossover Course (ICC). The program includes both instruction and evaluation. Enrollees receive the information needed to prepare for NAUI membership and NAUI leadership training. Participants are given knowledge, water skill and other performance evaluations, critiques and counseling to ensure they are aware of their state of preparedness for NAUI membership and continued leadership training. Every subsequent leadership training level requires the following prerequisites.

Prerequisites:

• Minimum age 18
• Certified as a NAUI Scuba Diver or the equivalent.
• Certification as a NAUI Rescue Scuba Diver or the equivalent.
• Certified as a NAUI Nitrox Diver or equivalent.
• Certified as a NAUI Master Scuba diver or equivalent.
• Certified in NAUI First Aid for Dive Professionals or equivalent.
• Certified in NAUI Oxygen Provider or equivalent.
• A minimum of 25 logged open water scuba dives with a minimum of 12.5 hours bottom time. Dives shall be varied in environment, depth, and activities.

Assistant Instructor

The Assistant Instructor course is designed to introduce you to diving instruction and prepare you for the Instructor Training Course (ITC). You will practice assisting students with skills and you will be evaluated on your watermanship skills as well as multiple pool and classroom presentations.

This program includes:

•12 hours of classroom study in NAUI Leadership

and teaching theory

•Classroom, pool and ocean presentations

•Demonstration of “demonstration quality” watermanship skills

As an Assistant Instructor you will be able to assist NAUI instructors with pool and ocean training. After assisting with 4 SCUBA classes you can enroll in the instructor program.

Prerequisites:

•Minimum age 18

•Current physical

•Certified Master and Rescue Diver

•All prerequisites listed for the FIT program

•Current First Aid/CPR

•Swim 450 yards in less than 10 minutes; 25 yards underwater on one breath; survival swim for 20 minutes; tow another person 50 yards.

•Snorkel 900 yards; snorkel D&R.

•Scuba lifesaving transport; scuba D&R; scuba bailout.

•75 logged dives

•Participants must provide all of their own gear.

Divemaster

This is the highest NAUI Leadership level next to instructor! You will learn how to organize and conduct safe, enjoyable beach and boat trips for certified divers.

This course consists of:

•20 hours classroom

•10 hours of in water training.

•10 ocean dives

After certification you may conduct recognition programs, hire yourself out as a Dive master/tour guide at dive resorts and on live aboard, and assist NAUI Instructors with pool and ocean training.

Prerequisites:

•Minimum age of 18

•Same as Assistant Instructor Course

•75 Logged Dives

•Current Physical

•Participants must provide all of their own gear.

Instructor Training Course (ITC)

If you enjoy diving and working with people then become a NAUI instructor and help people to safely dive in the underwater world. You will have the rewarding experience of instructing students that will thank you for helping them discover the underwater world which in turn will change their lives. As a NAUI instructor you will be able to instruct basic through leadership levels plus many specialties!

This challenging course consists of:

•15 hours pool and ocean presentations

•75 classroom hours

•7 classroom presentations
